Dalton, Massachusetts, in 1884 was a mill village in the hills of Berkshire County, where paper was the town's main business. The Crane family's paper works had grown into one of the country's best-known suppliers of fine writing and banknote paper, and their mills and the workers' houses clustered around them shaped the town's daily life. Pittsfield, the county seat a few miles away, drew Dalton residents for courts, markets, and rail connections on the Boston and Albany line through the Berkshires. Townspeople of the period would have known Dalton as a company town with a strong sense of civic pride, its churches, schools, and stores arranged along the main streets that this view records. The growth of paper manufacturing made the 1880s a time of steady expansion for the village.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Dalton, Massachusetts, drawn in 1884. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
