East Boston in 1879 was a waterfront district that had been absorbed into the city of Boston only a few decades earlier, when it was still known as Noddle's Island. Its identity was tied to the harbor. Donald McKay's shipyard had built some of the fastest clipper ships of the 1850s, and although that golden era was fading by the late 1870s, ship repair, rigging, and maritime trades still employed many residents. Ferries carried workers and goods across the water to Boston proper, and the steamship docks along the shore linked the district to the wider Atlantic trade. The neighborhood's population was made up largely of Irish and other immigrant families who lived in close, dense blocks near the piers, and the street plan on this map reflects a community built around the water's edge.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of East Boston, Massachusetts, drawn in 1879. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
