Few pictures of wartime worship show the setting as directly as this one, which records a divine service led by Rev. P. P. Cooney on Easter Sunday 1864. Easter fell on March 27 that year, while Union forces were still encamped and preparing for the campaign against Atlanta that opened in May. Chaplains of the period often held services out of doors, with men gathered in ranks or on makeshift benches, and such gatherings gave soldiers a brief pause for reflection before the fighting resumed.
