Riverside Drive, the scenic boulevard that follows the Hudson River along Manhattan's west side, is the setting here, a place that drew strollers and carriage riders on fine spring days. Easter Sunday was a traditional occasion for New Yorkers to dress in new clothes and go out in public, and the Easter promenade on Fifth Avenue is the better-known version of that custom. This print, dated about 1904 and copyrighted by R.F. Turnbull of New York, shows pedestrians on the drive during the holiday and offers a glimpse of how city crowds spent their leisure in the early 1900s.
