Union Square in Manhattan, a plaza at the crossroads of Broadway and Fourth Avenue, was a common place for street vendors and flower sellers, and this 1908 glass negative records stalls of Easter blossoms set out for the holiday crowds. The picture comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress, the working archive of the Bain News Service, a photo agency that sold pictures of daily news and city life to newspapers. Its title comes from the agency's own caption cards and has not been independently verified, so the exact stall and vendors are best read as a general view of the Easter trade. Such scenes show how seasonal goods moved through the streets of early twentieth-century New York.
