Union Square in Manhattan was a busy gathering place in 1908, and this glass negative captures flowers offered for sale there around the Easter season. The record dates the picture to April 19, 1908, a week after Easter Sunday that year, so the stalls may have been selling leftover holiday stock or preparing for the next round of spring buyers. The image comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by the Bain News Service, a photo agency that supplied pictures of city life to newspapers. The title is taken from unverified data on the negative, so the exact location and occasion should be read with some caution.
