Here a baby is in trouble in a scene that combines children, a dog, and food or drink, a mix of sentiment and mild comedy. The chromolithograph was issued around 1869 by L. Prang & Co., the Boston firm run by Louis Prang, which did much to make color printing affordable. Chromolithographs like this one were sold to middle-class households, where they hung as cheerful scenes of everyday domestic life. Genre pictures of children and pets were among the firm's most popular subjects in the 1860s.
