North Yakima in 1889 was a young railroad town in the Yakima Valley of central Washington, having grown up only a few years after the Northern Pacific line reached the area in the mid-1880s. Its economy rested on the surrounding valley, where settlers were turning sagebrush and bunchgrass into orchards, hop yards, and irrigated fields, and the town served as a shipping point for those crops and for livestock. Stores, churches, and a growing number of schools lined its streets as families arrived from the Midwest and from the Pacific coast. That same year Washington was admitted to the Union as the 42nd state, a change residents would have marked with pride and some expectation of what statehood might bring to a place like this.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of North Yakima, Washington, drawn in 1889. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
