Dayton, in the Touchet River valley of southeastern Washington Territory, was the seat of Columbia County in 1884, and its economy rested on the wheat and livestock raised on the rolling hills and bottomlands around it. Washington would not become a state until 1889, so residents of the town were still living under territorial government, with county officials and local merchants handling the business of a young farming community. The town's streets, courthouse, churches, and business blocks were laid out close together around its central square, and the artist who drew this view recorded each lot for the owners and merchants who would have bought a copy. Dayton's residents knew it as a grain and trade center serving the farms that spread across the surrounding country, and the map shows how much of that life was built around the county seat.

| Notes | An original bird's-eye view map of Dayton, Washington, drawn in 1884. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives. Reproduced from the original in the Library of Congress collections. Printed to order on archival paper. Free shipping on all US orders. |
