Seattle in 1878 was a small lumber and coal town of a few thousand people on the eastern shore of Elliott Bay, in the Territory of Washington. Henry Yesler's steam sawmill, which had operated on the waterfront since the 1850s, anchored the economy, and logs were dragged down the hillside along a path that became known as skid road. Lumber and coal from the region's mines went out by schooner and steamer across Puget Sound, and the town was still waiting for a transcontinental railroad link that would not arrive until the mid-1880s. Residents of the period knew Seattle as a rough, growing frontier port, one whose fortunes rose and fell with the timber trade and the arrival of each new ship.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Seattle, Washington, drawn in 1878. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
