River Falls in 1880 was a small town in Pierce County, western Wisconsin, built around the falls of the Kinnickinnic River, where the drop in water had long turned the wheels of sawmills and grist mills. Lumber cut upriver fed those mills, while local farm grain moved out to market by wagon and, after the railroads reached the region, by rail. The state normal school, which opened in 1875 to train teachers, gave the town a second identity beside its industry, and students and faculty became a regular presence on its streets. Residents would have known River Falls as a mill town with a teachers' school, a place where the river still set the pace of work.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of River Falls, Wisconsin, drawn in 1880. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
