Eighteen thousand officers and men were arranged into the outline of a towering Statue of Liberty, a feat that sets this photograph apart from ordinary camp portraits. Col. Wm. Newman commanded the post, and Col. Rush S. Wells directed the formation at Camp Dodge in Des Moines, Iowa. Camp Dodge was one of the large training cantonments built in 1917, as the United States entered World War I, and mass living tableaux like this one were a popular way to display patriotism and the sheer size of the new army. The photoprint was made by Mole & Thomas.
