A striped canopy is the first thing the eye lands on here, shading a fair game booth where a crowd has gathered several deep to watch. County fairs of this era were built around such midway attractions, with ring tosses, target shooting and chance games drawing farm families in from the surrounding countryside after the harvest work slowed. Booths like this one ran on a mix of skill and luck, and the people pressed close to the counter were often as much the show as the prizes on the shelves. Look closely at the spectators' clothing and hats to get a sense of the rural community that came to town for the day.
