The title names a man, Musgrove, and shows a crowd gathered around a hanging in this line engraving by A.P. Proctor. The catalog dates it only to the 1870s, and the caption card notes a figure smoking tobacco among the onlookers. Line engravings were cut by hand into metal plates, and their fine parallel strokes let printmakers render dense groups of spectators. Images of lynchings from this period were sometimes reproduced as sensational scenes, so viewers should consider what the engraver chose to emphasize. The record is unverified, so the identity of Musgrove and the exact circumstances remain uncertain.
