What sets this London studio portrait apart is its inscription: it was autographed to General John J. Pershing, commander of the American Expeditionary Forces in France during the First World War. The print dates to 1919, the year after the Armistice, when Winston Churchill was serving as Secretary of State for War and Air and Britain and the United States were turning their wartime partnership toward peace. The photograph was made by Elliott & Fry, a well-known London portrait studio. The Library of Congress later included it in the 2004 exhibition *Churchill and the Great Republic*, which examined Churchill's ties to America.
