Rome, better known for its ancient ruins than its ballparks, is the setting for this image of an Army and Navy baseball game in action. The caption card dates it only to between 1914 and 1918, and the record's details are unverified, but the subject fits the First World War years, when American servicemen stationed in Italy turned to organized sports to fill their time off duty. Baseball traveled well with American troops, and the friendly rivalry between the service branches gave these games extra spirit. The picture offers a glimpse of wartime leisure far from home.
