Charles Walter Couldock, a English-born stage actor who worked on American stages for much of the nineteenth century, appears here with a young woman whom the caption tentatively identifies as his daughter, Eliza. The wood engraving illustrates a scene from *The Chimney Corner* and ran in *Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper* on November 13, 1869. Such engravings translated live performances into line work for weekly readers who could not attend the theater, so the image reflects how newspapers reached audiences before photographs were easily reproduced in print.
