A glass negative bearing the name Henry Morgenthau Jr. survives in the Bain News Service files, though the identification is unverified and the record gives no date. Morgenthau served as Secretary of the Treasury under Franklin D. Roosevelt from 1934 to 1945, a stretch that included wartime bond drives and the financing of World War II. Bain News Service, the New York agency founded by George Grantham Bain, supplied newspapers with news pictures in the early twentieth century, so its negatives reflect the press photography of that era. Because the record is thin, the occasion behind this portrait remains unknown.
