Choctaw players are the focus of this color lithograph, which shows a ball play, the sport that later informed the modern game of lacrosse. The subjects are tied to Oklahoma, then part of the Indian Territory where the Choctaw had been relocated in the 1830s. George Catlin, who painted and sketched many Native communities he encountered, produced the image for his *North American Indian Portfolio*, published in London in 1844. Its value lies in recording a game that carried social, ceremonial, and competitive weight within Choctaw life.
