The British army under William Howe sailed out of Boston on March 17, 1776, after more than eleven months of siege that followed the battles of Lexington and Concord and Bunker Hill. George Washington's forces had dragged heavy cannon from Fort Ticonderoga to Dorchester Heights overlooking the harbor, and the threat of bombardment forced the evacuation. This engraving, drawn by L. Hollis and engraved by F.T. Stuart, was made for a nineteenth-century biography series, so it shows the scene as later artists imagined it rather than as an eyewitness sketch. It is worth noticing how the composition stresses the departing ships and the crowded shoreline.
