This is an official printed proclamation from the executive office of the State of Minnesota, issued in 1885 to call the people of the state to observe a day of thanksgiving. Such proclamations were a yearly custom by then. Abraham Lincoln had asked the nation to set aside a day of thanks in 1863, and in the decades after, governors in many states followed that model. Documents like this one show how a state government shaped a shared holiday, setting a date and asking residents to give thanks for the harvest and the year's blessings.
