Governors in New England issued formal proclamations like this one each autumn, naming a statewide day for giving thanks, rest and worship. The custom reached back to colonial days, and President Abraham Lincoln had proclaimed a national day of thanksgiving in 1863, but states continued to set their own dates. The formal wording of such documents shows how the holiday was presented as a civic duty as well as a family occasion.
