Little is recorded about the occasion behind this glass negative, which the Bain News Service labeled simply as Theodore Roosevelt in New York. The agency, founded by George Grantham Bain, supplied news photographs to newspapers across the country, and its negatives capture how public figures appeared to readers of the period. Roosevelt rose from the governorship of New York to the vice presidency and then the presidency in 1901, and he was among the most photographed men of his time. Because the title comes from the agency's own unverified caption data, the setting and date are best treated as approximate.
