A gnome sits within the curve of a large gold letter O, holding a letter while flowers rise around him. The pairing of a folklore figure with an ornamental initial borrows from medieval manuscripts, where capital letters often held small scenes of people and plants. By the late 1800s, illustrators of greeting cards and children's books were drawing on this tradition and on northern European tales of gnomes who guard gardens and hidden treasure, so the figure reads as both a messenger and a keeper of the garden. The gold ornament is worth a close look, since it gives the page the glow of an old manuscript.
