Findlay, Ohio, in 1889 was a small county seat on the Blanchard River in Hancock County, and it was in the middle of a natural gas boom. Gas struck in the area in 1886 drew glassworks and other manufacturers that wanted cheap fuel, and residents watched the town's streets, factories and houses multiply as newcomers arrived. Local people then knew Findlay chiefly as a gas town, with its bright gas street lamps and furnaces running day and night. This bird's-eye view shows that moment of rapid change, when a farm-market town was becoming an industrial center, and the boom would later fade as the gas supply declined.
