Kent, Ohio, in 1882 was a small river town in Portage County, where the Cuyahoga River powered mills and the railroad brought in freight and passengers. Its economy rested on grain milling, woodworking, and trade with surrounding farms, and the rail line tied the town to Cleveland and other markets. The town's schooling drew attention beyond its borders, since a normal school on the edge of the business district trained teachers for classrooms across the region. Residents of the time would have known Kent for its mills, its church spires and commercial blocks, and its steady, modest growth after the Civil War. The map records those streets and buildings as they stood that year, before later expansion reshaped the town.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Kent, Ohio, drawn in 1882. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
