Youngstown, Ohio, in 1882 was an iron town on the Mahoning River, and its economy rested on rolling mills, blast furnaces and foundries that drew on the coal and ore of the surrounding valley. Railroads carried rails, plates and bar iron out of the mill district, and the mills gave the city its growth after the Civil War. Youngstown had been incorporated as a city only in 1867, and in the years that followed its population rose as workers arrived from Wales, England and Ireland to labor in the furnaces and mills. Residents knew the place for its smoke and its steady industrial work, with the river running past the factories and homes climbing the hills above them.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Youngstown, Ohio, drawn in 1882. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
