Ravenna, the seat of Portage County in northeastern Ohio, was a railroad town in 1882, with tracks that carried farm produce, dairy goods, and manufactured wares east and west. The surrounding countryside of dairy farms, orchards, and grain fields supplied the town's markets, and its mills and small shops employed many of the families living on its streets. County government centered on the courthouse square, where lawyers, merchants, and officials met during court sessions and elections. Residents of the period knew Ravenna as a steady, prosperous county seat tied to the rail lines that ran through it, and the street-by-street detail in this 1882 view records the churches, schools, and commercial blocks that defined that world.

| Notes | An original bird's-eye view map of Ravenna, Ohio, drawn in 1882. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
