Named for General Herman Haupt, this locomotive honors the Union Army engineer who oversaw the building and repair of military railroads and bridges during the Civil War. Haupt, a Pennsylvania civil engineer, earned a reputation for rebuilding track and bridges quickly under wartime pressure, work that helped keep Union supply lines moving. Railroad companies often named their engines after officers, directors and engineers they admired, so a locomotive carrying Haupt's name reflects the respect he earned among the men who ran the lines.
