Hampton Court, the brick palace on the Thames southwest of London, is the subject of this drawing, which Arthur B. Heaton made during a trip to Europe. Cardinal Thomas Wolsey began the palace around 1514, and Henry VIII later took it over and enlarged it, so its courtyards and façades mix Tudor work with later additions. Heaton worked in watercolor and graphite, combining careful measurement with loose color, which shows how an architect of his time recorded historic buildings both as design study and as a visual impression.
