Titled "Americans! Share the meat as a wartime necessity," this color poster was printed by the U.S. Government Printing Office in Washington in 1942, when the country was newly at war and food was becoming a matter of national planning. Meat was in high demand for American troops and for Allied nations receiving U.S. supplies, so the government asked civilians to cut back voluntarily before formal rationing arrived. Posters like this one used short, direct appeals and bold color to frame restraint at the dinner table as a patriotic duty. The poster also shows how the home front was asked to take part in the war effort.
