Narciso López, the Venezuelan-born general who wanted to free Cuba from Spanish rule, is the figure at the center of this 1850 political cartoon, which mocks him for collecting money. That May he led a small filibustering force ashore at Cárdenas, on Cuba's north coast, hoping to spark an uprising. The landing was quickly defeated, and López withdrew to the United States. The lithograph, published in New York by John L. Magee, reflects the divided American reaction to filibuster schemes, which drew both sympathy and condemnation. López was captured and executed in Havana in 1851.
