Little is recorded about this glass negative beyond its caption, which gives only the title "H. Morgenthau" and no date. The name fits two prominent men of the early twentieth century, Henry Morgenthau Sr., who served as American ambassador to the Ottoman Empire, and his son, Henry Morgenthau Jr., later Treasury Secretary, so the identification should be treated as provisional. The negative comes from the Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied news pictures to newspapers in the 1900s and 1910s, and its small glass plates show the quick, workmanlike portraiture that made such agencies important to the press of the period.
