Ludwig Hohlwein's 1908 poster "Winter in Bayern" sells the Bavarian winter as a sporting holiday, with sleds and sleighs as its main subject. Printed in Munich by the Vereinigte Druckereien Kunstanstalten, it belongs to a wave of German travel posters from the years around 1900 to 1910, when railways and a growing middle class were drawing visitors to the Alps and other scenic regions. Hohlwein, who would become one of Germany's best-known poster designers, used flat areas of color and bold outlines to make a winter landscape read clearly from across a street, a style worth noting for anyone interested in early commercial graphic design.
