Hingham, Massachusetts, in 1885 was a harbor town on the South Shore, settled in the 1630s and long tied to the sea. Its shipyards and wharves on Hingham Harbor drew on the nearby bay, and the coming of the Old Colony Railroad had already turned the town into a commuting link to Boston. Residents of the village center, along with the farmers and mariners of the outlying districts, lived in a community where churches, schools, and the town meeting shaped civic life. The map records each building in that compact village, from the houses along its lanes to the wharf district at the water's edge. For the people who lived there, it showed the familiar layout of a town that was still shaped by its seafaring past.

| Notes | An original bird's-eye view map of Hingham, Massachusetts, drawn in 1885. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives. Reproduced from the original in the Library of Congress collections. Printed to order on archival paper. Free shipping on all US orders. |
