Hebronville, a mill village in the town of Attleboro in southeastern Massachusetts, is shown here as it stood in 1891. Attleboro had long depended on manufacturing, and by the 1890s the town and its neighbors were known for jewelry making, alongside textile and metalworking shops that drew workers from the surrounding countryside and from immigrant communities arriving in New England. Hebronville's mills and worker housing were clustered along the waterways that powered them, and the village's fortunes rose and fell with the demand for cloth and small metal goods. The people who lived there would have known the place first as a working village, where the mill whistle set the daily rhythm and a family's livelihood tied closely to the mill gate.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Hebronville, Massachusetts, drawn in 1891. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
