The title sets up a deliberate contrast between what may be happening abroad and what is happening at home. Dated 1769 and engraved for the *Political Register*, a London periodical that took a sharp anti-ministerial line, the print turns its viewers' attention toward the American colonies, where opposition to the Townshend duties and the presence of British troops was growing, even as domestic political quarrels consumed Britain. Satirical prints like this circulated widely and were a major way ordinary readers followed public affairs. Today the Library of Congress holds it in its British cartoon collection, and it is cataloged among graphics documenting the American Revolution.
