This color poster from about 1899 advertises John Robinson's "10 big shows combined," with a scene of the meeting of King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba. John Robinson's circus was one of the best-known traveling shows of the late nineteenth century, and its billing promised a multi-ring spectacle in a single tent. Cincinnati's Russell-Morgan firm was among the leading American makers of lithographed circus posters, and the record lists dancers as a subject, which reflects how these shows leaned on pageantry and exotic display. Biblical scenes like this one were popular on posters because they offered costumed grandeur that audiences would recognize at a glance.
