Rives, the organizer of France's automobile salon, appears here in a caricature with peacocks, a subject that points to the showy self-regard the artist was mocking. The drawing was made in blue crayon and watercolor and signed in the lower left by the caricaturist Cléandre, whose work often appeared in the satirical weekly *Le Rire*. It ran in that magazine on December 22, 1906. The Salon de l'Automobile had been held in Paris since 1898, and by the mid-1900s it was a major showcase for the new motor industry, so Rives's prominence made him an easy target for satire.
