Rice, Washington, is a small community in Stevens County, in the northeastern part of the state, and this glass negative is one of many the Bain News Service made and sent out from its New York office. George Grantham Bain founded the agency around 1899 to supply newspapers with news photographs, and his collection, now held by the Library of Congress, documents events and places across the United States in the early twentieth century. The record gives no date for this view, so it is best read as part of that wider project of reporting on American towns and events through pictures that could be quickly reproduced in print.
