Marie Dressler, the Canadian-born actress and comedian, is the subject of this glass negative from the George Grantham Bain Collection, the large body of news and portrait photographs made by the Bain News Service in New York. Dressler rose from vaudeville and Broadway comedy to become one of the most popular film stars of the early 1930s, winning an Academy Award for her role in Min and Bill in 1931. The Bain Service supplied press photographs to newspapers across the country, so portraits like this one were made to be reproduced and circulated to a wide audience. The record gives no date, so the sitting is best understood within the Bain studio's broader output in the early twentieth century.
