Robert M. La Follette Jr. was the son of the Wisconsin progressive Robert M. La Follette Sr., and he carried the family's reform politics into the U.S. Senate, where he served from 1925 to 1946. This glass negative comes from the Bain News Service, a New York picture agency that sold news photographs to newspapers and magazines in the early twentieth century. The record gives no date, so the occasion behind the portrait is unknown, but the collection as a whole documents the national political figures of that period. La Follette is remembered for the Senate committee he chaired in the late 1930s, which investigated labor practices and civil liberties.
