The record names only one subject, a man identified as D.B. Robertson, and the Bain News Service that supplied the title did not verify that identification, so the exact person and occasion remain unknown. The negative is one of the glass plates from the George Grantham Bain Collection, which the Library of Congress holds. Bain founded his New York agency around 1899 to supply news photographs to newspapers, and its plates record a wide range of people and events in the early twentieth century. Glass negatives like this one were the standard working medium of news photography until film largely replaced them. Because the caption cards are the only source for the name, the sitter's identity is worth checking against other records before drawing conclusions.
