The lighthouse tower rises behind a keeper's residence, with a flagpole standing in the yard between them, a layout common at coastal stations where the keeper's family lived within sight of the light they tended. Lighthouses of this kind were working navigation aids, and the keeper's duties ran around the clock: trimming wicks, winding the clockwork that turned the lens, and logging weather and passing vessels. The flagpole was often used to signal to passing ships or to mark holidays and changes of service. The arrangement of tower, dwelling and flag together shows how much of a station's life revolved around the light itself.
