Hernando de Soto is shown here as a formal figure rather than a scene of action, which suits an engraving made for a book of record. The print appeared in Antonio de Herrera's *Historia General*, a multivolume account of Spanish activity in the Americas published in Madrid. De Soto led an expedition through what is now the southeastern United States from 1539 until his death in 1542, and he is credited with reaching the Mississippi River. Because no portrait of him from life is known, the likeness was probably imagined by the engraver, so it reflects how Spanish readers of the early 1600s pictured the conquistador.
