Soldiers gaze out over Alsace in this 1918 poster, which pairs its patriotic image with a line from Victor Hugo. Hugo spent much of his later life denouncing Germany's annexation of Alsace and part of Lorraine after the Franco-Prussian War of 1870 to 1871, so quoting him tied the wartime cause to a long national grievance. By 1918, the recovery of Alsace had become a powerful symbol for many French citizens, and posters like this one were meant to keep that goal in view as the fighting drew toward its close.
