A team of horses pulls a grain harvester across a wide golden field, with rows of cut sheaves stood up in shocks to dry before threshing. Before combines took over in the mid-20th century, this kind of work was the heart of the autumn season on many farms, when neighbors often traded labor to bring in the crop before weather turned. The harvest was tied to the Thanksgiving holiday in American tradition, and scenes like this one show the hard physical labor that stood behind the table spread for the meal. Look closely at the shocks, which were built by hand so the grain could cure without rotting.
