Orizaba is a city in the state of Veracruz in eastern Mexico, set at the foot of Pico de Orizaba, the country's highest peak, which is also called Citlaltépetl. The record's title is unverified, so the view may show the city, its mountain setting, or a nearby scene. Bain News Service, the New York photo agency whose glass negatives make up this collection, sold pictures of distant places and current events to newspapers in the early twentieth century. Orizaba was a textile and manufacturing center on the railway route between the Gulf coast and Mexico City, so the picture may reflect that busy commercial life.
