Aviators gathered on a Cunard pier suggests a moment when flight and transatlantic travel were both news, since Cunard's liners carried passengers between New York and Britain. The record gives no date or individual names, and its title comes from unverified caption information that the Bain News Service attached to the negatives. The Bain agency, active in New York from about 1900 into the 1920s, sold pictures of current events to newspapers, so its images often capture crowds, arrivals and departures. The glass negative format also preserves fine detail in faces and clothing, which helps show the leather coats, caps and goggles associated with early aviators.
