A long panoramic print, nearly four feet wide, shows teams of horses pulling plows across open ground in California's Imperial Valley, where turning desert scrub into farmland was still a recent undertaking around 1913. The valley's fields depended on water carried from the Colorado River through irrigation canals, and breaking the soil with plows was among the first steps before crops could follow. The image was submitted for copyright in March 1913 by S. U. Bunnell, which makes it a record of the agricultural push that was reshaping the desert at that time.
